OCTOBER

Each month, we will feature books here for each age group. These titles are a good place to start when trying to find books to read with your kids.

You will find the title, author, a picture of the cover, and a summary for each one. We hope you enjoy our selection, and remember to check back each month for new books!

Birth to 12 Months:

At this age, babies will want to grab and touch books, so cloth, vinyl, and board books are very durable. They also are short, so they will hold a very small child's attention.

Title: Smile!

Author: Roberta Grobel Intrater

This is a book of baby faces full of expression! You and your child will enjoy the bright colors and simple text during your first reading experiences together!

BACK

1 - 2 years

Kids at this age enjoy hearing and seeing stories about themselves. Look for books about toddlers and their daily activities.

Title: No, David!

Author: David Shannon

David is a young boy who always seems to be getting into trouble. In the end though, he will always have his mother's love.

BACK

2 - 3 years

As kids learn more words, they love to read along with you!

Choose books with patterns and rhymes, and listen as your child begins to read along with you. Read the same book many times with your toddler.

Title: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

Authors: Bill Martin Jr. & Eric Carle

This book about animals explores colors. It has a simple pattern that repeats throughout the book. Also, the words go along with the pictures, making it easy for kids to guess what comes next.

BACK

3 - 4 years

As kids enter preschool, and begin preparing for kindergarten, look for books about the alphabet and numbers to add to your collection.

Also, keep going back to some of the old favorites as well!

Title: Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom

Author: Bill Martin, Jr. & John Archambault

All of the alphabet letters want to go to the top of the coconut tree! Will there be enough room, or will the letters have to come up with another plan?

BACK

5 years & older

When your child begins school, he or she will bring home stories about new books and skills. Encourage your child to talk about these experiences. Also, look for books he or she has heard at school.

Begin choosing longer and more difficult stories to read with your child!

Title: Corduroy

Author: Don Freeman

Corduroy, a teddy bear, is locked inside of the store at night! This story tells about his adventures as he explores the store, and how he ends up finding a new home.

According to Jim Trelease, "major research in the last twenty-five years confirms that regardless of background, students who read the most:

read the best, achieve the most, and stay in school the longest."
